A Guide to Southern Vietnam: Saigon’s Energy & the Mighty Mekong

Chào bạn!

Welcome to Southern Vietnam, a region I love for its vibrant energy, tropical climate, and incredibly delicious food. Here, life moves to a different rhythm. You’ll feel it in the non-stop buzz of Ho Chi Minh City, and you’ll taste it in our bold, often sweeter cuisine, rich with coconut milk and fresh herbs from the delta.

From the thrilling pace of Saigon to the peaceful, water-world of the Mekong and the pristine beaches of our islands, the South is a land of exciting contrasts. Let me show you around!

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): A Metropolis in Motion

Ho Chi Minh City—a name I love, but a city I’ll always call Saigon—is the cosmopolitan heart of Vietnam. It’s a thrilling sensory experience where the hum of millions of motorbikes is our constant soundtrack. Here, gleaming skyscrapers stand proudly next to ancient pagodas and humble street food stalls serving the best food you’ll ever taste.

Must-Do Experiences in Saigon:

  • Journey Through History: Saigon is central to the story of the Vietnam War. A visit to the Reunification Palace is essential; this is where the war officially ended when a tank crashed through its gates in 1975. The War Remnants Museum offers a powerful and moving Vietnamese perspective on the conflict. For a truly immersive experience, a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels is a must.
  • Admire the Colonial Landmarks: You can still feel the city’s colonial past in beautiful buildings like the striking red-brick Notre Dame Cathedral and the magnificent Central Post Office, a grand masterpiece from the 19th century.
  • Experience Modern & Local Life: For the best view in town, head up to the Saigon Skydeck for a stunning 360-degree panorama. For a more down-to-earth experience, get lost in the bustling Ben Thanh Market. My personal favorite quirky spot is The Cafe Apartment, an old apartment block where every apartment has been turned into a unique cafe or boutique shop!
  • Explore Cholon (Chinatown): A visit to Saigon isn’t complete without exploring the atmospheric Cholon (District 5). It feels different from the city center, with the massive wholesale Binh Tay Market and beautiful, incense-filled temples like the Thien Hau Pagoda.

The Mekong Delta: The River of Nine Dragons

Just a short drive south of Saigon, the world slows down and the mighty Mekong River splinters into a vast, fertile network of waterways. We call this the “rice bowl” of Vietnam. It’s a peaceful, green landscape where life is lived on the water, offering a perfect counterpoint to the city’s intensity.

  • Can Tho: The Delta’s Hub: As the largest city in the delta, Can Tho is the perfect base for exploration. The one thing you absolutely must do is wake up early to see the Cai Rang floating market. Seeing hundreds of boats laden with colorful fruits and vegetables trading on the water as the sun rises is a memory you’ll never forget. From Can Tho, we can also take a peaceful sampan ride through quiet canals, visit a family-run noodle factory, or cycle through lush fruit orchards.
  • Chau Doc: Culture at the Border: For those wanting to go deeper, Chau Doc is a fascinating town near the Cambodian border with a rich mix of cultures. The highlight here is a boat trip through the enchanting Tra Su Cajuput Forest, a vast, flooded forest and bird sanctuary. It’s a truly serene and magical experience.

Island Escapes: Phu Quoc & Con Dao

Ready for the beach? Southern Vietnam is home to two incredible archipelagos, each offering a different slice of paradise.

  • Phu Quoc: The Tropical Paradise: If you’re dreaming of white-sand beaches and clear turquoise water, Phu Quoc is your destination. It’s Vietnam’s premier island escape. You can relax on beautiful Sao Beach, explore the lively night market, snorkel on an island-hopping tour, or ride the record-breaking Hon Thom Cable Car for spectacular views.
  • Con Dao: The Tranquil Retreat: For travelers seeking a more remote and peaceful escape, I always recommend Con Dao. A short flight from Saigon, these islands are a protected national park and remain wonderfully undeveloped. Historically known for its brutal prisons, Con Dao has transformed into a paradise for nature lovers, with pristine, empty beaches, lush jungle for trekking, and some of the best diving in Vietnam. It’s the perfect place to truly disconnect.
